Packs

A pack is a packing list. It pulls gear out of your gear locker into one loadout: a summer day-hike kit, a full winter overnight setup, a thru-hike resupply configuration. Packs is the backpack tab on the bottom navigation bar.

Browsing Your Packs

Each pack is a card showing:

  • The pack name
  • Its description, up to three lines
  • A base weight badge
  • An item count badge ("14 items")
  • A cloud-done chip when the pack is shared to the web

With Pack images switched on, a thumbnail sits to the left of the name.

Tabs

By default the Packs screen is a single list of your active packs. Switch on Pack lifecycle ("Enable pack archive") in Appearance & Preferences and it becomes tabbed.

Requires: Section Hiker+ tier for pack lifecycle

The screen lands on Active.

The Systems tab needs Pack lifecycle as well. Switch on both Pack systems and Pack lifecycle to get it. Systems live on that tab alone and never appear in the ordinary pack list.

Creating a Pack

  1. Tap the + button.
  2. Set the Pack type if you want a system rather than an ordinary pack (see below). You cannot change this after saving.
  3. Enter a Name. It must be longer than 5 characters ("Pack must have a name longer than 5 characters.").
  4. Optionally add a Description and Notes (notes need the Pack notes preference).
  5. Optionally set the Status to Active or Archived, if pack lifecycle is on.
  6. Optionally add an image (Section Hiker+ and the Pack images preference).
  7. Tap the floating check button to save.

Pack Types

Requires: Thru Hiker tier, plus the Pack systems preference

A Pack Type section appears at the top of the editor with a segmented control offering Pack and System.

A System is a reusable group of gear, for example a cook system holding stove, pot, canister and lighter. Link that system into any pack that needs it, then change the system once and every pack linked to it follows. See Pack Contents for how linking works.

Pack type can only be set while the pack is new. The control locks once the pack is saved, so decide before your first save. To change your mind, create a fresh pack of the right type.

Editing a Pack

Tap a pack card to open Pack Contents. From there:

  • The edit icon at the top of the screen opens the Pack Editor for name, description, notes, status and image
  • The add button adds gear or systems
  • The share icon opens the share and export sheet, see Sharing & Exporting Packs
  • The Charts tab holds the weight breakdown, see Pack Analytics

Duplicating a Pack

Long-press a pack card. You are asked "Duplicate this pack?" and confirming creates a full copy with the same contents.

Archived packs cannot be duplicated from the list.

Deleting a Pack

Swipe a pack card left and confirm. There is no delete icon.

Deleting is only possible when:

  • You are online
  • For a system, it is not currently linked into any pack. Try it while it is linked and you get "This system is included in one or more packs. Remove it from those packs first."

Archived packs cannot be swiped away. Restore them to Active first.

Deleting a pack never touches your locker. The gear items stay exactly where they were.

Archived Packs Are Read-only

Open an archived pack and you can look but not change: the add button is hidden, items cannot be edited or swiped away. Set the Status back to Active in the Pack Editor to work on it again.

Tip: Name packs so you can tell them apart at a glance. "Cape Wrath - May, wet" beats "Pack 2", and the name is what you will be reading in the Included in packs list on every gear item.
