Trips

Requires: Thru Hiker tier

Trips bring everything together: your gear, your route and the trail itself. Plan an adventure, break it into sections, check the weather, and record your progress with live GPS.

Browsing Your Trips

The Trips screen has two tabs, Active and Archived. Active trips are your current or upcoming adventures. Archived trips are grouped by year, one year open at a time; tap a year heading to open it.

Each trip card shows the trip name, the start date, and chips for the number of sections and the total route distance across them. With trip images switched on, the card also shows the cover photo.

GestureWhat it does
Tap a cardOpens the trip
Long-press a cardOpens the trip editor directly
Swipe a card leftDeletes the trip, after a confirmation

The checklist icon at the top of the screen opens All Tasks, a single list of open tasks across every trip.

Choosing a Trip Type

When you tap +, the app asks What kind of trip? before the editor opens. The answer shapes the whole trip, so it comes first.

OptionDescription shownWhat it means
Shorter tripOne pack and one forecast for the whole trip. The pack and the weather location are set once, at trip level, and apply to every section. The trip gets a Weather tab; the sections do not. Shots are kept in one list at trip level.
Thru-hikeMulti-leg trip, each section has its own pack and weather.Every section carries its own pack, its own weather location and its own shot list.

Cancel, or a tap outside the dialogue, creates nothing.

Creating a Trip

  1. Tap the + button on the Trips screen
  2. Choose Shorter trip or Thru-hike
  3. Fill in the editor
  4. Tap the save button

Changing the Trip Type Later

You can switch a trip between the two types in the editor. The app warns you first when something is at stake:

  • Switching to a thru-hike clears the trip's pack, location and forecast, because those move down to the sections.
  • Switching to a shorter trip keeps everything, but shots held on any section other than the first stay out of reach until you switch back. The warning tells you how many.

Both warnings offer Cancel or Continue.

The Trip Screen

Open a trip and you get a tabbed screen. The tabs are icons only, with no text labels. On Thru Hiker a thru-hike has four tabs and a shorter trip has five. Content Creator adds the Shots tab, making five and six.

Buttons Across the Top

Reorder (stacked lines)Turns on section reorder mode
ShareExports the trip and hands it to the system share sheet. Mobile only
Hide listCollapses the list pane so the detail pane gets the full width. Wide screens only

In reorder mode the same buttons become a tick (save the new order) and a cross (cancel and put the old order back).

Sections Tab

This is the trip's home tab. It shows:

  • The trip name. If there is a description, tap the name to expand or collapse it
  • The planned start date
  • Hero stats across all sections: total distance, total metres or feet of ascent, and the number of days. Days come from your section analysis divided by your Hiking hours per day preference
  • The Sections card, listing every section with its distance, ascent and descent chips, a warning chip if a section has a route but no analysis, and a download icon if its map tiles are cached for offline use
  • The Contiguous route switch

Tap the + button to add a section. The app creates one named "Section 1", "Section 2" and so on, and opens the section editor so you can rename it. See Trip Sections.

Plan and Track

At the top of the Sections card is a two-way toggle:

ModeTapping a section
PlanOpens the section, on its Details tab
TrackOpens Live Tracking for that section straight away

The mode you last used is remembered. The toggle is mobile only, and appears once the trip has a section in it.

Contiguous Route

A switch at the bottom of the Sections card, labelled Contiguous route, with the subtitle "Waypoints are ordered by position along the full route, not by section."

Turn it on and the trip-level Waypoints tab sorts every waypoint by its distance from the start of the trip, rather than grouping them section by section. Distance, ascent and trip length are calculated the same way either way.

Reordering Sections

  1. Tap the reorder icon at the top of the screen
  2. Drag sections by their handles into the order you want
  3. Tap the tick to save, or the cross to cancel

The tab strip is locked while you are reordering.

Deleting a Section

Swipe a section row left and confirm. Deleting a section removes its route, waypoints, notes, shots and weather. The linked pack is untouched.

Weather Tab

Shorter trips only. One forecast and one set of historical averages for the location you set in the trip editor. On a thru-hike, weather lives on each section instead. See Waypoints & Weather.

Waypoints Tab

Every waypoint from every section in one list, with a filter across the top: All, resupply, camp, water and turn. Each entry shows its distance from the start of the trip, so you can plan water carries and resupply gaps. See Waypoints & Weather.

Shots Tab

Content Creator only. On a shorter trip this is the editable shot list for the trip. On a thru-hike it is a read-only roll-up of the shots planned on each section; tap a section to jump straight to its Shots tab. See Trip Shot Planning.

Tasks Tab

Your pre-trip to-do list for this trip. Tap + to add one. See Trip Tasks.

Analysis Tab

Trip-wide numbers, pulled from each section's own analysis:

  • Hero stats: distance, time, days and calories per day
  • A Trip Summary table with one row per section (distance, time, days, calories, calories per day) and a total row
  • A Day-by-Day Breakdown grouping sections into days using your hiking hours per day
  • A Resupply Plan built from your resupply waypoints, showing the gap before each one and roughly how many calories to carry

Sections with no analysis yet are flagged. Open the section, go to its Analysis tab and tap Calculate Analysis to fill the gaps.

On a Wide Screen

On a tablet or desktop the trip opens as a split view: the tabs on the left, a detail pane on the right. The right pane follows the tab you are on, showing the trip map on the Sections tab, the map with waypoint pins on the Waypoints tab, and the analysis content on the Analysis tab. Tap Hide list to collapse the left pane to a thin rail, and the chevron on the rail to bring it back.

Archiving a Trip

Archiving is a status you set in the editor:

  1. Open the trip and tap the pencil icon
  2. Under Status, choose Archived
  3. Save

The trip moves to the Archived tab, filed under the year of its start date. Everything is kept: sections, routes, traces, waypoints, shots and tasks. Set the status back to Active to bring it back.

Deleting a Trip

Swipe the trip's row left on the Trips list and confirm.

This removes the trip and everything under it: sections, routes, waypoints, shots, tasks and recorded traces. The Packs linked to it are not affected.

Tip: Turn Contiguous route on for a thru-hike where the sections join end to end. It makes the trip Waypoints tab read as one continuous route, so the gaps between water sources and resupply points are measured across section boundaries instead of restarting at each leg.
