Everything you can do with a finished pack (publish it to the web, copy its link, export it as a PDF or an XML archive) lives in one bottom sheet headed Share.
Opening the Share Sheet
Open a pack and tap the share icon at the top of the screen. On a tablet or desktop it is the third icon, after edit and refresh.
The sheet will not open on an empty pack. If the pack has no items, the share icon does nothing. Add something first.
Straight under the heading, a status line tells you where the pack stands: Your pack is shared or Your pack is not shared.
Sharing to the Web
The SHARE section holds three round buttons.
| Button | Does |
|---|---|
| Share | Publishes the pack and generates a public link. Once the pack is shared this button reads Update instead |
| Link | Copies the existing link to your clipboard, without republishing |
| Remove | Withdraws the pack from the web. The link stops working for everyone |
On a successful Share or Update the link is copied to your clipboard automatically, and the sheet confirms with "Copied share link to the clipboard". You do not need to press Link as well.
Publishing a Pack
- Open the pack and tap the share icon.
- Tap Share.
- The link is generated and copied to your clipboard. Paste it wherever you like.
A shared pack is marked with a cloud-done chip on its card in the Packs list.
Updating a Shared Pack
Changes you make to a pack do not reach the web copy on their own. Reopen the sheet and tap Update. The link stays the same, so anyone holding it sees the new version.
Unsharing
Tap Remove. The web copy is deleted and the status line reverts to Your pack is not shared.
How Many Packs You Can Share
| Tier | Shared packs |
|---|---|
| Day Hiker (free) | 3 |
| Section Hiker | 10 |
| Thru Hiker | 25 |
Try to share one too many and you get "Shared packs limit of N reached". Updating an already-shared pack never counts against the limit. Remove a pack you no longer need published to free a slot.
Exporting
Requires: Section Hiker+ tier. Neither export is available on web.
The EXPORT section has two buttons:
| Button | Produces |
|---|---|
| A formatted packing list, good for printing or sending on | |
| Zip XML | A zipped XML archive of the pack, for backup or for importing into another Back in Pack account |
Tap either one. The file is built (the sheet shows "Exporting pack data ...") and then handed to your device's share sheet to save or send.
Gear images are included in the XML archive when Gear images is switched on in Appearance & Preferences.
PDF Options
A PDF OPTIONS section sits at the foot of the sheet with three switches. Set them before you tap PDF.
| Switch | Subtitle |
|---|---|
| Inline images | Small picture of each gear item |
| Purchase values | Shows the value of each item |
| Purchase receipts | Requires gear and receipt images |
Inline images starts switched on or off to match your Gear images preference. The other two start off.
The Share Link
Sharing a pack produces a public link at https://mypack.backinpack.com. That is the link the Share and Link buttons put on your clipboard, and it is what you send to anyone you want to show the pack to.
Tip: Share once, then use Link whenever you need the URL again. Pressing Share/Update republishes the whole pack, which is only worth doing when the contents have actually changed.
