Pack Categories

Categories group your gear, both in the gear locker and inside every pack. Back in Pack gives you a starter set the first time you sign in, and you can rename, reorder, add to and prune them.

The Starter Categories

A new account gets nine categories:

CategoryNotes
UnclassifiedThe app default. Anything without a category lands here
Carrying
Shelter
Sleeping
Clothing
Cooking - Eating - Hydration
Safety - Fix
Hygiene
Electronics

None of these names are fixed, so rename them to suit how you think about your kit. Unclassified is the one exception: it cannot be opened, renamed or deleted.

Getting There

Profile → Categories. The screen itself is titled Pack Categories.

Each row shows a category icon, the name, and the number of gear items in it on the right ("12 items"). Your own default category carries a star.

Creating a Category

  1. Tap the + button.
  2. Type a Name. It must be at least 5 characters ("Name must have at least 5 characters").
  3. Tap the save button.

A new category goes to the bottom of the list until you reorder it.

Editing a Category

Tap a category to open the editor and change its name. The change flows through everywhere the category is used: the locker headings, the chip row, pack contents and the category ring chart.

Unclassified is not tappable.

Setting Your Default Category

Long-press a category. You are asked "Set the default category to '<name>'?" and confirming makes it your default. Your default is the category the chip row and the gear picker open on, and the one a new gear item starts in. A star marks it in the list.

Reordering Categories

Reordering is its own mode:

  1. Tap the reorder icon in the toolbar. Every row grows a drag handle.
  2. Drag rows into the order you want.
  3. Tap the check icon to save, or the cross icon to cancel and put the list back as it was.

The saved order sets the category headings in the locker, the filter chips, and the category groups in pack contents.

Deleting a Category

Swipe a category row left. There is no delete icon.

A category can only be swiped away when all of the following are true:

  • It holds zero gear items
  • It is not Unclassified
  • It is not your default category
  • You are online

To retire a category that is still in use, move its items to another category first (open each item and change its Pack Category), then delete the empty category.

Where Categories Show Up

  • Gear screen: headings on the Wishlist and Archived tabs, and the filter chip row on the Active tab
  • Gear Item Editor: the Pack Category dropdown
  • Pack Contents: items grouped under a heading per category
  • Charts: one ring segment and one legend row per category
  • Community Gear: the Add to which category? dialog when copying an item in

Tip: Keep the list short. Every category becomes a chip, a legend row and a ring segment, so a dozen well-chosen groups read far better than thirty precise ones.
