Profile and Account

The Profile tab is where you manage your account, your personal details and every app-wide setting. The screen is titled Profile & Settings.

What you see on this screen depends on your tier. Rows your tier does not include are hidden rather than greyed out.

Signing Out

Sign out with the logout icon in the top right of the screen. Your data stays in the cloud and is waiting when you sign back in.

What Each Tier Gets

There are four account tiers: Day Hiker (free), Section Hiker, Thru Hiker and Content Creator. Each includes everything in the tiers below it.

Free on Every Tier

Changing Tier

Tap the tier button on the Account level row to open the Change Account screen. It lists all four tiers, each with a short description of what it adds and its monthly price. Your current plan is shown at the top.

On iOS and Android each paid tier has a Subscribe button, or Switch to this plan if you already pay. Restore purchases brings back a subscription bought on another device, and Manage subscription opens your App Store or Google Play account. Subscriptions renew monthly until you cancel them there. On the web and macOS the screen is view-only: subscriptions are bought and managed in the mobile app, and your plan applies everywhere you sign in.

The Profile & Settings Rows, in Order

1. Your Identity Card

The card at the top of the screen shows your avatar, your display name (or Name not set), Joined on {date}, and T&Cs accepted on {date} once you have accepted the community terms. Tap it to open the My Profile editor.

The My Profile Editor

FieldNotes
AvatarTap the image to upload a photo from your device, or delete the current one
Display nameEditable, with the rules below
User id (Reference)Read-only
Email address (Reference)Read-only

Save with the tick button at the bottom right.

The editor needs a connection. Offline, the avatar controls and the save button disappear and the name field is locked.

Display name rules. These apply on every tier. Changing your name is free.

  1. The name must be at least 8 characters. Shorter names show "Name must be longer than 8 characters."
  2. As you type, the app checks the name against everyone else's. A tick means it is free, a cross means "User name already exists or is invalid. Please retry."
  3. A profanity filter runs over the name. Names matching back, in and pack in sequence are also rejected. Either way the name becomes Anonymous rather than saving.
  4. A display name can only be changed once every 180 days. The editor shows the date your next change becomes available, and blocks the field until then. Confirm the change in the dialog that appears when you save.

Admins bypass the 180-day cooldown.

2. Account Level

Shows your current tier on a button. See "What each tier gets" above.

Help & Feedback

3. Help Videos

Opens the Back in Pack video tutorials in your browser.

4. Helpdesk

6. Gear

Toggles for the Gear Locker. See Appearance & Preferences.

7. Categories

Manage the categories your gear is filed under. See Pack Categories.

8. Currencies

Only appears once Purchase attributes is switched on in Profile → Gear, which itself needs Section Hiker. See Purchase Currencies.

9. Packs

Toggles for packs. See Appearance & Preferences.

10. Trips

Thru Hiker only. Trip images, hiking hours per day, tracking distance and location accuracy. See Appearance & Preferences.

11. Map Tiles

Thru Hiker only. Not available on the web.

The screen this opens is titled Manage Map Tiles, and that is exactly what it does. It lists the map tiles already cached on your device and lets you delete them. Each entry shows the route section it belongs to, the zoom range and the date it was downloaded.

Downloads happen per trip section, on the Route tab of a trip. Come to this screen to see what is taking up space and free some of it up. Entries whose section has since been deleted are marked so you can clear them.

12. My Measurements

Thru Hiker only.

These figures are used for hiking time and calorie estimates inside the app. As the screen says, the data is not shared with anyone and is not visible to other users.

The fields, in the order they appear:

FieldNotes
GenderMale, Female or Other
HeightIn cm, or feet and inches
WeightIn kg or lb
Stride LengthIn cm. Auto-calculated from your height multiplied by a factor that depends on gender, not from gender alone. Adjust it by hand if you know your real stride, or press Reset to calculated to go back to the estimate
Fitness LevelAdjusts estimated hiking times for your conditioning. "Fit" matches standard guidebook pace
Year of BirthUsed to work out your age for the BMR estimate. Your age is shown below the field
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)In kcal/day. Auto-calculated from your gender, height, weight and age. Enter it manually if you know your real figure, or press Reset to calculated

Finish with Update Measurements.

13. Shot Framings

14. Shot Lighting

About

18. Version

The last row shows the app name, version and build number. Quote these if you contact the helpdesk.

Deleting Your Data

Tap Delete all data and profile. This opens a single screen with two checkboxes.

  1. Confirm delete all data (required) removes your gear, packs, trips and personal data.
  2. Confirm delete account is an optional second checkbox that also removes the account itself.

Tick what you want and press Delete.

This deletes your data on all devices, not just the one in your hand. Posts you have made in the Discuss community stay where they are.

Roles: Admin, Moderator and Publisher

Three roles exist alongside the tiers. All are invite-only and cannot be bought, and most users will never see them. They are independent, so one person can hold any combination. If one is switched on for you, here is what it adds.

RoleWhat it adds
ModeratorModeration tools in Community: the Moderate tab, managing groups and topics, and merging, moving, deleting or archiving threads
PublisherLets you publish items from your own locker into the shared Community Gear catalogue that everyone browses
AdminFull curation of the Community Gear catalogue, extra tools in the route editor, and no 180-day wait to change your display name

Tip: If you are on Thru Hiker, fill in My Measurements before you plan your first trip. Even rough figures give you usable hiking times and calorie estimates, and the stride length feeds directly into the day-by-day breakdown.
