Requires: Section Hiker tier
If you record what you paid for your gear, and you buy from more than one country, Purchase Currencies keeps each price in the currency you actually paid in. The app fetches the exchange rates for you.
Turning It On
The Currencies row appears once Purchase attributes is on. To reveal it:
- Go to Profile → Gear.
- Switch on Purchase attributes (subtitle "Prices, dates and receipts").
- Go back. Currencies now sits in the Maintenance section, between Categories and Packs.
The Purchase attributes switch itself needs Section Hiker. On Day Hiker it shows *\ Upgrade** in place of its subtitle. See Appearance & Preferences.
The Currency List
The list screen is titled Purchase Currencies. Each row shows the currency's sign on the left, its name and ISO code, a star if it is your default, and a count of how many gear items use it.
Add a currency with the + button at the bottom right.
Adding or Editing a Currency
Tap +, or tap an existing currency to edit it. The editor has three fields.
| Field | Rule |
|---|---|
| Name | More than 5 characters, for example "Pound Sterling" |
| ISO Code (3 letters) | Exactly 3 characters, for example GBP, USD, EUR |
| Sign | 1 or 2 characters, for example £, $, kr |
Save with the tick button.
The app fetches the exchange rate for you, so there is no rate field to fill in. The ISO code is what makes that lookup work, so use the real three-letter code rather than one of your own.
Exchange Rates
Rates come from frankfurter.dev over the internet, based on whichever currency you have set as your default. The app fetches them:
- when you set a default currency
- when you save a currency in the editor
- when you tap the currency exchange icon at the top of the Purchase Currencies screen
The refresh icon asks "Do you want to retrieve exchange rates from the internet?" before it runs, and reports Refreshed exchange rates when it is done.
Refreshing needs a connection, so the icon appears only when you are online.
Setting Your Default Currency
Press and hold a currency in the list. Confirm at the "Set the default currency?" prompt.
The app then saves your choice and fetches fresh rates against the new base, reporting "Set the default currency and fetched exchange rates". A star marks the default in the list.
Your default currency cannot be deleted, and neither can a currency that any gear item is still using.
Using a Currency on a Gear Item
Open any gear item. With Purchase attributes on, the item gains its purchase fields, including a Purchase Currency dropdown alongside the price. Pick the currency you actually paid in.
The same dropdown appears on the LighterPack import screen, where it sets the currency for every price in that import. See Importing Data.
Deleting a Currency
Swipe a currency left in the list. You cannot delete:
- the built-in default currency
- the currency currently set as your default
- any currency still attached to gear items
Reassign the items or change your default first.
Tip: Set your default currency to the one you buy in most often. Every rate the app fetches is relative to that base, so the figures you see day to day need no conversion at all.
